Font Sample Page

(If your browser does not display some of the Greek letters on this page, I discuss Unicode issues on this page.)

On this page I am mainly concerned with Unicode fonts for Hebrew, Greek, Phonetics, and the symbols in the apparatus of the Nestle-Aland 27th edition New Testament.  I consider the first 4 fonts listed here to be must-have fonts for any Biblical student or scholar.  And they are all free of charge.

GentiumAlt

Free download.  Available for Windows, Mac intosh, and Linux.  Serif, upright.  Compact text.  The Latin/English text looks good, and it has all the International Phonetic Alphabet glyphs except for the 5 tone bars.  It also works for the Unicode superscript numeral glyphs, and for Hebrew and Greek transliteration.  The Macintosh link given above is the font in the older format that will work for both OS9 and OSX.  Mac OSX will also use the Windows version.  Some versions of Linux will use the Windows link, but some need the Debian package from the Linux link.

ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ "in the last day."  א     ⁴⁷ Σ Ξ ɧ ʣ ʖ

Doulos SIL

Free download.  Available for Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux.  Serif, upright.  This is especially designed for the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).  As you can see, it is a very nice looking English font, and also very good for the Unicode superscript numerals.  In addition, it contains all the symbols in the NA27 Greek footnote apparatus.  Excellent for Hebrew and Greek transliteration.

               σχ                     "in the last day."  א 𝔐 𝔓⁴⁷    ɧ ʣ ʖ

Ezra SIL SR

Free download.  Available for Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux.  Serif, upright.  This is the clearest Hebrew font by far.  It has a companion font that comes with it, called Ezra SIL, but I feel the cantillation marks with that variant are not as clear as this one.  The Latin / English type with is is good too, as you can see here.

μ     "in the last day."  א
 הוֹשִׁיעָה נָּא
- hšîh n Ps. 118:25

Cardo98

Free download.  Available for Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux.  Serif, upright.  Medium spread-out text.  The only single font that has all the glyphs in my documents.  2,881 glyphs.  A very nice looking Greek font when printed out.   It also has all the Hebrew glyphs including cantillation and diacritics, and all the IPA glyphs.  Good for Hebrew and Greek transliteration.  The Latin / English appearance I don't like so much.

  ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ "in the last day."  א 𝔐 𝔓⁴⁷ Σ Ξ ɧ ʣ ʖ
 הוֹשִׁיעָה נָּא
- hōšîʻāh nāʼ Ps. 118:25

FreeSerifCopticMS

Free download.  For Windows, but can probably be made to work in Mac OSX.  There is not a lare selection of free Unicode Coptic fonts.  The trait about this I don't like is that it uses up so much space above and below the lines.

Palatino Linotype

This font comes free with Windows 2000 and XP, and also with Office 2003.  It is one of the clearest English fonts I have ever seen, and definitely the clearest font for the superscript numerals.  It contains the full Unicode polytonic Greek glyph repertoire, though the accents, breathing marks, and subcripts are a little too small for my liking.  This font can be purchased from other sources, such as

Free download.  Available for Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux.  Serif, upright.  I think this is a good looking Greek, English and Latin font.

Charis SIL

Free download.  Available for Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux.  Serif, upright.  Very spread-out text.  This is especially designed for the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).  As you can see, it is a very nice looking English font, and also very good for the Unicode superscript numberals.  In addition, it contains all the symbols in the NA27 Greek footnote apparatus.  Excellent for Hebrew and Greek transliteration.

Arial Unicode MS

This comes free with Windows.  This is probably the largest font in existence, in that it has the glyphs for more languages than any other font out there.  But it is sans-serif, which I do not like.
